Adhesive bonding is the process of joining two substrates together using chemical processes. The reasons to choose adhesive bonding are simple. Adhesive bonding can provide strong, sometimes permanent bonds without puncturing or damaging the substrate. This ensures a reduced risk of leaks and corrosion. Additionally, the process of bonding spreads the joining stress across the surface of the bond. While other forms of joining such as threaded fasteners focus on the stress of bonding onto specific points, adhesives naturally diversify the stress load.
Structural adhesives provide bond strengths that rival the material itself while cyanoacrylates provide near-instant curing. Still other adhesive cures in the absence of oxygen or when exposed to UV light. The variety of adhesives gives manufacturers many choices but can also be challenging to fully grasp.
